Washington vs.

Greg's preview: Washington vs. - COMMENTS - Thoughts on yesterday... the Huskies just step up to the big challenges. I think over the Lambright years we got accustomed to uninspired play. The basic difference is now the Huskies come to play every week. This is the first game they've hit on all cylandars. The run worked, O-line blocked, receivers ran routes, and the defense stepped up BIG. Paul Arnold dropped an ESPN highlight catch but it ended up not mattering, and he made up for it with a more spectacular catch. Reggie was out for most of the game but other guys stepped in and made the plays. Pat Reddick, a mostly unsung receiver, and Todd Elstom are just super-reliable. I have been waiting to see Kevin Ware step up at TE and he came up huge. He took a big 'ol hit in the 4th quarter but held onto that 3rd down pass. This team has so many weapons at receiver it's scary. One thing that must drive other teams crazy is the Husky ability to convert on big 3rd downs. 3rd and 14, 11, 7, whatever, they come up with the big play and keep driving. Pickett is now looking off the defense, whereas in his first games he'd just stare at Reggie Williams for a couple seconds. This run against Stanford is almost as big as the one against Cal. Coach Willingham is probably now making it his personal mission to beat Washington before he leaves Stanford. Except for one 80 yard Stanford run the stats were virtually identical. Washington stopped the Stanford run and played excellent coverage in the secondary. Their big Ex-Washington player Teyo Johnson was harrassed by the fans. The fans around me anyway. OK maybe it was just me. There was a scary moment as their strong saftey was driven off the field by the aid car. Everybody had a few moments of horrible "not again" thoughts. I'm glad to read it's not an extremely serious injury. Sean said what everybody was thinking, this team has improved about 100% since the beginning of the season. I think they have a chance against a good Miami team. Against WSU and OSU - both of those games are losable but I have to like our chances. After the game everybody went to the Dutchess, which is probably the most Husky of all Husky bars. Prince Dedoubt, last year's mascot, slept under our table as we had a few Henry's and watched the Yanks get pounded and Harrington continue heaving the football against ASU. It's good to be the Husky! I'm not sure where we got that saying but it's true some days. - Greg
